Party Blooper

Christmas party season is well and truly upon us. Like every year, the art of juggling canapés, drinks, napkins and clutch bags (for the ladies) is as tough as Santa hauling his big belly around. Here is a summary of nibbles to be wary of or avoid at the next Chrissie bash- which is pretty much all canapés.
Tricky Toothpicks
Food on a stick looks easy at the outset. But what do you do with the toothpick once you’ve guzzled the bite-size snack? Hold on to it and risk stabbing fellow partygoers when shaking hands? Attempt to discreetly slip it on to a table or into your bag? Or maybe a BYO bin policy needs to be introduced.
Chicken Wings Not So Fly
It is totally acceptable to get elbow-deep in chicken wing sauciness with your mates at the pub. But it’s harder to wing it at a function. A) They aren’t the most attractive food to eat and b) unlike a toothpick, you can’t stick a bone in your bag. Unless you don’t mind looking like a cannibal.
Wacko Tacos
Trendy? Tick. Messy? Tick. The phrase ‘ay caramba’ was created for a reason.
Uncosy Spooning
Food on a spoon, oh-so-fancy and Donna Hay-esque. But you’ll need some of her styling tips when trying to slurp from a spoon elegantly. And some assistance wouldn’t go astray when the cutlery’s contents ends up on your face.
(Not So) Mini Hamburgers
You are confident you can tackle the mini burger in one mouthful. But this plan is toast when spillage strikes or you’re left with a mouthful of meat.
Slippery Dip
…Oops! And there goes your hors d'oeuvre into the dip/sauce/salsa. Awkward. Plus, dips spell danger when double-dipping is in full force.
Crunch Time
This applies to crunchy, carbo-loaded goods that are often oily to the touch such as spring rolls and spinach triangles. Although they are tasty, it isn’t pleasant when pastry flakes are sprayed on party outfits. There are better accessories for a Collette Dinnigan frock.
Skewers: You’re Screwed
Food served on skewers means it’s a similar scenario to toothpicks. Skewers are just bigger. Larger sticks translate to potentially larger injuries and/or mishaps. Looks like a BYO first aid kit policy also needs to be introduced next year.
