harvest to home market update 13 September, 2011

The last week has been a mish mash of weather – ranging from balmy and clear to cold, crisp and very wet in some parts. A good range of weather over a longer timeframe but not beneficial when it all takes place over a one week period! As a result we aren’t seeing the richness in quality and supply that we were expecting. Refer below for the full breakdown.

The Good News:
Avocado (well priced)
Beans - Green and Handpicked (prices eased and good supply)
Beetroot (large better)
Broccoli (prices cheap)
Cabbage (all good)
Chilli (Red and Birdseye easing)
Red, Green and Yellow Capsicum (all cheap)
Cauliflower (good and cheap)
Celeriac (good)
Celery (good and cheap)
Corn (plenty and cheap)
Eggplant (QLD now and prices cheap)
Fennel
Kumera (cheap!)
Oranges (CHEAP!)
Blood Oranges (plenty about)
Strawberries (great quality and cheap)
Grapefruit
Kiwi fruit (good quality and cheap)
Leek (good quality and plenty about)
Lettuce (prices down)
Mandarins (good quality and cheap)
Mango (plenty about)
Mushrooms (Button are good and flat getting better),
Parsnip (plenty about)
Peas, Snowpeas and Sugarsnap (Australian best & cheap)
Tomato (prices easing)

The Not so Good News:
Chilli (Green scarce)
Cucumber (Telegraph & Lebanese price rising)
Ginger (still high price)
Lemons (prices heading up)
Limes (high prices)
Mandarin (quality on the way out)
Melons (prices not great)
Onions (brown up in price)
Butternut Pumpkin (very pricey)

To sum up, get stuck into the blood oranges, Roma tomatoes, celery, baby spinach, Kipfler potatoes, red caps and asparagus and hold fire on the strawberries for a week or so.

Until next week, happy and healthy eating!
