harvest to home market update 23 August, 2011

“Good news” is what appears to be in season at the moment!! The grossly overpriced items are all returning back to normal – bananas, red capsicums, truss tomatoes, snow & sugar snap, just to name a few. Lebanese cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower and spinach are also great buys this week. Check out below for more details:

The Good News:
Asparagus (Peru & Mildura, prices easing)
Avocado (well priced)
Beans - Green & Handpicked (prices easing)
Beetroot (large better)
Broccoli (best value veg)
Cabbage (all good)
Red, Green & Yellow Capsicum (all well priced)
Cauliflower (good & cheap)
Celeriac (good)
Celery (good quality and cheap)
Fennel
Kumera (cheap)
Oranges (CHEAP)
Strawberries (great quality and cheap)
Grapefruit
Kiwi fruit (good quality and cheap)
Leek (plenty about)
Lemons
Mandarins (good quality and cheap)
Mushrooms (Button are good & flat getting better),
Tomato (prices easing)

The Not so Good News:
Chilli (Green & Red scarce & Birdseye very expensive)
Cucumber (Telegraph & Lebanese are still exxy)
Eggplant (prices high but easing)
Ginger (still high price)
Mandarin (quality on the way out)
Mango (some Mexican, expensive and tasteless)
Melons (pricey)
Onions (brown up in price)
Butternut Pumpkin (very expensive)
Wild Rocket (very scarce)
Zucchini (good quality prices but still high)
Bananas (although starting to get better, still a touch overpriced)

As “seasonal produce” is the mantra, be mindful that we are approaching the season’s end for mandarins. So if you’re used to the great quality and price of those little orange treats, this might be one of your last chances to snap them up.

Until next week, happy and healthy eating!
