Buns of Style

There is a dramatically different bun in the oven at Neil Perry’s Rockpool Bar and Grill. With its plush surrounds and bling-y chandelier made from 2682 wine glasses, this is where the burgers are actually better.
1. Name that burger
David Blackmore’s Full Blood Wagyu Hamburger.
2. Where did you buy it?
Rockpool Bar and Grill, Sydney.
3. What’s on it?
Wagyu beef pattie, bacon, Gruyere cheese, Zuni pickle, onion and relish on a brioche bun.
4. Nice buns?
The sweetness of the freshly-toasted brioche bun offsets the burger’s savoury components to a tee.
5. Would you eat it again?
Even as a non-meat freak, this is a damn tasty, not to mention classy burger I’d willingly come back for.
6. In terms of quality is it more Neil Perry or Pauline Hanson?
Funny that, it is Neil Perry quality…literally. Meaning it deserves top marks for premium ingredients. From the deluxe Wagyu beef to the Zuni pickle – nothing like the soggy green guys from the Golden Arches. Not to mention the artfully arranged salad on the side. With a $24 price tag, it’s worlds away from Pauline’s fryers.
7. If you wrote an 80’s love ballad for this burger what would it be called? What would the lyrics to the chorus be?
It would be called ‘Rockpool Fool’ and the chorus would go like this, ‘I was a fool to fall in love at Rockpool. It was just 1987 when I was in burger heaven. Oh Wagyu how I love you. Ooh ooh ooh.’
8. Could you eat it while riding a skateboard? Or is it a more messy sit-down affair?
Since it is a neatly composed number, you could probably hang on to it while skating. But to respect its prestige status in the burgersphere it’s best to trade the board for a tablecloth.
9. How long did it take you to eat?
This was a serious sit down affair, so it took significantly longer to consume than usual. As making a mess in Rockpool is a no-no dahhhling, a combo of knife and fork action and careful lifting was adopted. No sauce dripping down the arm here.
10. Rate it out of five stars
Four point five. If the ponytailed Mr. Perry himself served up my meal, that would rock even more.
