Are we denying the people their crust?
The sandwich is just not given enough credit down-under. Maybe its because we are busy fussing over wraps and burgers, I don’t know but the sandwich holds, between its crusts, a potentially mind-blowing taste sensation that is overlooked. Mainly because the sanga is domesticated, a lunchbox filler.
But its time we took a stand. I am an ambassador for the sandwich in all its simple glory, because just like a burger it can hit the spot quickly. Lets break it down, a sandwich is 1. convenient 2. filling and 3. yummy.
So what’s the problem? Why do sandwiches seem so lack-lust?
My travels through England taught me that sometimes a simple sandwich was the only way to get through a cold and miserable London day. Every corner store sold a variety of sandwiches, and specialty stores like Prêt a Manger prepared them daily. With flavours like ‘cracking egg salad’ and ‘pole and line, caught tuna nicoise on granary’, the names alone are enough to make you change your mind about how seriously you should take a sandwich.
Why are we so blasé about sandwiches in Aus? Is it because we were sent to school with poor efforts in sandwich-making, like the good ol’ vegemite sandwich, for so long that we have lost the will to see a sandwich that is worth eating. Are we denying the people their crust?
Why are we frilling around with tapas and canapés when we have a not too shabby equivalent the Sandwich!
Held between two soft slices of bread moist fillings can include salmon and Philadelphia or something more familiar like egg, (sounds weird but we all love them deep down). The sandwich needs a Britney style comeback and its up to the people to give it a chance.
It’s time we suss out the GOOD sandwich shops on offer, so that the next time someone asks you what to get for lunch the obvious answer will be “a sandwich”.

I agree! I often bought leftovers to school (ie - lasagna, pasta, pizza). if it wasn't a full meal I bought in, I just put leftovers (ie - meatballs / marinated peppers or eggplant /schnitzel) in a roll or bread and added some cheese & various condiments to make me a killer sandwich. All my non euro friends were well jealous.
Bring it back!

The sandwhich needs a Britney style comeback... yes it does! BUt I think you are right, we don't have a great love for the sanga as all of us dealt with 12 years of then every day at school. I remember my Italian friend would bring lasange with a fork.... maybe if we gave our kids more variety we might still love the odd sandwhich once we can buy our own lunch.
