harvest to home market update 26th July, 2011

Winter is definitely here! And the good news – the worst of the banana situation is behind us with the first signs of the post-cyclone produce beginning to trickle through. Still a young and small fruit, but a good sign none the less. With that said, the beginnings of better supplies seems to be the general tone, with some slightly better prices, and the underlying promise of better things to come.

The Good News:
Avocado
Beans - Green & Handpicked (prices easing)
Beetroot
Broccoli (best value veg)
Cabbage
Green & Yellow Capsicum
Carrots (very good supply)
Cauliflower
Celeriac
Celery (good quality and getting cheaper)
Corn (plentiful)
Fennel
Kumera (cheap)
Leek (better quality and prices easing)
Onions
Oranges (CHEAP)
Strawberries (good quality and cheap)
Grapefruit
Kiwi fruit (good quality and cheap)
Lemons
Mandarins (good quality and cheap)
Rockmelons
Rhubarb (local supply & prices easing)

The Not so Good News:
Asparagus (prices are high)
Chilli (Green & Red scarce & Birdseye very expensive)
Cucumber (Telegraph & Lebanese are still exxy)
Eggplant (prices high)
Ginger (expensive)
Lettuce (Iceburg & Cos- prices a little high)
Mango (some Mexican, expensive and tasteless)
Mushrooms (Button are scarce, Field are even more scarce),
Wild Rocket (very scarce)
Tomato (ALL are expensive)
Zucchini (good quality prices but still high)
Bananas (very expensive)
Limes (scarce)

With the coldest month of the year nearly behind us we can look forward to a better climate and produce supplies. So on that note, sit tight, be patient and cash in where the prices are easing (and they are) because, sure enough, the supply will follow suit shortly.

Have a great week!
