harvest to home market update 19th July, 2011

It’s school holidays, the snow is falling and the Aussie dollar is still doing well. This all means different things to different people. For us, on the produce side of things, it’s a mixed bag of good and not so good news. The holidays have eased demands a little but this brisk weather has managed to keep supply passive. The result – prices have settled a fraction but generally, fruit and veg can be exxy.

The Good News:
Avocado
Beetroot
Broccoli (best value veg)
Cabbage
Green & Yellow Capsicum
Carrots (very good supply)
Cauliflower
Celery (good quality and getting cheaper),
Corn (plenty),
Fennel
Leek
Onions
Tomato (cherry are good)
Strawberries (good quality and cheap)
Grapefruit
Kiwi fruit (good quality and cheap)
Lemons
Mandarins (good quality and cheap)
Rockmelons
Navel Oranges (good and cheap)
Rhubarb

The Not so Good News:
Asparagus (prices are high)
Handpicked Green Beans (expensive)
Chilli (Red are scarce & Birdseye can be pricey)
Ginger
Mushrooms (Button are scarce, Field are even more scarce),
Wild Rocket (very scarce)
Tomato (Salad and Roma expensive)
Zucchini (good quality prices but still high)
Bananas (very expensive)
Limes (scarce).

Remember, the best rule of thumb, when buying fresh produce, is to always steer toward what’s plentiful. And on that note, while the Aussie dollar’s strength can be a good thing, the downside is that it has made our oranges far too expensive to export. Farmers are suffering due to serious surplus and wastage issues. So why not kill two birds with one stone – buy some oranges and build your defences against the cold and help the Aussie farmer too.
